BOSTON, (Reuters) – Assets of U.S. exchange-traded funds rose to $263.84 billion at the end of October from $259.47 billion the previous month, the Investment Company Institute said on Tuesday.
ETF assets were also up from $226.21 billion ….
at the end of 2004, the Washington-based mutual fund lobby group noted in a report.
ETFs are baskets of stocks that track indices of equities, bonds and other assets and trade like a single stock.
In recent years, they have gained much attention and pulled in new assets at rapid pace as investors were shaken by a scandal in the mutual fund industry.
Assets of stock index ETFs rose by $3.93 billion to $249.43 billion in October, while bond funds increased by $448 million to $14.4 billion, ICI said.
Also in the month, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $11.01 billion and a total 187 ETFs were available, up from 179 at the end of September.
